Owner Spotlight: Dan and Jackie Downey
Dan and I are both RNs and farmers! We have raised three children who are all (finally) living locally and are enjoying our three grandchildren. One of our sons, James, is a partner in our farm, Sundown Farm, in the rural Reedsville area. We raise grass-fed Scottish Highland beef cattle and Hamp/York cross hogs. We keep hens for our own eggs as well as have a small garden and orchard. Our hobbies….family time and enjoying the country life!
Why did we invest in the Clipper City Co-op and become an owner?
We feel the co-op is an investment in the health and wellness of the people of Manitowoc County. The co-op will provide local producers a place to market their products but, more importantly, a place for people to shop for quality, locally-produced food year -around. The bonuses include the education that will be shared among owners and the public, the friendships and working relationships that will develop among like-minded people and the jobs that will be created all while supporting local farmers and keeping our money in local.
Why do you think Manitowoc needs a food co-op?
We are excited that the area will have a store that promotes locally-produced, natural foods that are grown by people with care and concern. We want to know where our food comes from and believe in supporting sustainable agriculture and growing the local economy. We are also looking forward to networking with people with interests similar to ours and what we can learn from each other.
